Best Female Character 2008-2009

Best Female Character
Betty Draper (Mad Men): first nomination
Played by: January Jones
~Lets take a flash back to the 60's. Strong women were forced to hide behind their cheating husbands, because leaving someone wasn't an option. Being a divorce then made you an outcast. Betty Draper had to deal with a poor husband, and tried to face it like any devoted woman of the time would do, but finally it became apparent too her as while she could turn down a chance for an affair, her husband could not. Without going into too much detail, she stood up and became a more powerful woman than ever, showing that the 60's really were a time for change.
Abby Mills (Harper's Island): first nomination
Played by: Elaine Cassidy
~Harper's Island was a show made for me, with violence, death, and a mystery. The centermost character in it all was Abigail Mills as she struggled against her past and her morality. She always wanted to do what was right, and in some instances it may have cost her friends their lives. With that said, she will likely never be able to vanquish her inner demons of that island, as for all the loss she has seen.
Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood): first nomination
Played by: Anna Pacquin
~She is easily the lead character of True Blood, and was absolutely shafted from getting an Emmy nod for lead actress in a drama. True Blood is not just a show about Vampires, as there are shape shifters and mind readers among other things. Sookie is a mind reader who falls in love with Vampire, but this isn't some Twilight like love story. There is alot of violence and death (a common thing at times with my shows) and an undercurrent of anti-racism throughout the entire show. Sookie carries the show well, and definitely deserves to get recognized for it, so while the Emmy voters may not have, the Don Awards more than make up for that shaft.

Naomi Watts (Skins): first nomination
Played by: Lily Loveless
~Ok, first off searching for her actress' name was painful, seeing if you search Naomi Watts skins, you get a semi clad Naomi Watts actress. Never even though of the risk. Anyway, that is her actual characters name, as she claims that her parents wanted to torture her when they had her. Naomi is a character who is struggling with her sexuality majorly in her high school life. She clearly is in love with someone who completely loves her back, but is afraid to act on it at all, and when something does happen she runs from it in denial. The thing about all this, though, is that Lily Loveless (poor child with that last name) acts Naomi brilliantly and you can really feel for that character, maybe more so than any female character this year. Skins may not be a show you think much about, but you should...
Blair Woldorf (Gossip Girl): second nomination
Played by: Leighton Meester
~So I am minorly in love with Blair; so sue me. She was edged out very minutely by Chuck's sister Ellie last year for the Don Award for best female, as her first season was absolutely excellent. Instead of slipping away from her strong opening season, Blair became the centermost character of Gossip Girl, with her rude rich attitude, but somewhat of a lovable heart underneath. The season was all about Blair learning that she can't always have what she wanted, as she couldn't have Chuck or Yale, two of the things most important to her. This doesn't stop her from growing as a person, although luckily not growing too much that she leaves the good ol' Blair charm behind. She also consistently brings the humor to the show and is one of the funnier characters on tv, something Schwartz is always able to bring out.

~
No fancy post game talk this time, due to the fact that I need to produce two set of nominees today to get back on schedule. Only two new shows represented in this set, as both Mad Men and Skins joins the list of shows getting a nomination in something. Also a fairly new batch of nominees, as the only returner is Blair, and three of the other four characters are in the first ever season with the show (Sookie, Naomi, and Abby). Sometimes being new keeps you from being stale, which helped out this year in this category.

Best Male Television Character 2008-09

Best Male Character
Chuck Bartowski (Chuck): first nomination
Played by: Zack Levi
~Last year, one fan (Mark Thiell) asked about having a lead character category so Chuck could get noticed instead of all the supporting actors I love. Well, Chuck got noticed anyway. This was the year Chuck took a huge step forward as both a show and a character. All of the best moments this season (besides Jeffster) involved Chuck and another character's interactions. So lets honor this comedy character, he is a lovable dork, something I can't relate to (of course) but still cool nonetheless. "Can You Be Awesome?" The answer for Chuck is clearly, yes.
Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl): second nomination
Played by: Ed Westwick
~Back to back years of nominations for the villain of Gossip Girl. The thing about Chuck Bass, however, is that he isn't the villain he wasn't once was. Sure, he still brings the one liners and is unable to fully succumb to love, or at least without a lot of prodding. He also had to face the death of his father, and the plights of his uncle. Through it all, however, he was still pretty much the same Chuck we love, even if he had one terrible eyes-wide-shut storyline midseason, his rest of the year granted him forgiveness.
Peter Bishop (Fringe): first nomination
Played by: Joshua Jackson
~Good ol' Charlie Conway, or Good ol' Pacey. These are the two firstmost things that come to my mind when I think the acting styles of Joshua Jackson. Needless to say, neither of those personas were ever Don Award worthy, so I was wary about Abrams hiring Jackson for his next X-file-ish show. I can happily say that the worry was completely unjustifiable, as Joshua Jackson is the main reason now to watch Fringe. His relationship with his father is where the humor really shines, along with his somewhat shady past. Definitely earned the nom here.

James "Sawyer" Ford (LOST): fourth nomination
Played by: Josh Holliway
~If you really think about it, every season of LOST has a center character; a character who's role is much larger than in the past. An example of this is how season 5 was all about Sawyer. He was actually a potential nominee as a lead actor for the Emmy's showing that he truly was the centermost character. James Lafleur became a caring husband and a loyal man, and maybe that cost him everything. You always knew Sawyer was a good guy, but this was the season it became apparent to everyone. Plus he loves Winston Churchill, and isn't that cool...
Michael Weston (Burn Notice): first nomination
Played by: Jeffrey Donovan
~Burn Notice has only four regular characters, and the entire show revolves around the plights of one: Michael Weston. Michael Weston is a burned spy with skills unbeknown to the common man. Besides, his overvoice in the show is the most memorable and the best part of it (plus he teaches you how to do sweet spy moves). His calm demeanor and charm make him maybe the coolest individual on television these days, and he easily earned the nod this year, and may be a more serious contender than people think.

~
There you go... Two returners (including an unprecedented fourth nomination for Sawyer, meaning he has been nominated four of the five seasons of LOST) and three new faces. Also, four of the five characters would be considered leads in their show (seeing Sawyer listed himself as one for the Emmy's) so its finally come to the point that lead actors can finally stand out in my awards, something that did not happen in the past. With ten nominees given, we have already seen 9 shows represented, so variety is the thing of the year. Get ready tomorrow for the announcement on Best Female characters.

Best Reoccuring Character 2008-2009

Best Reoccurring Character
Richard Alpert (LOST): second nomination
Played by: Nestor Carbonell
~This is Richard's second nomination, but if he doesn't become a regular in LOST's final season, I would say that the smart money is that we haven't seen the last of him yet in these awards. Richard is one of the most enigmatic characters on LOST. Many assume he is of the Black Rock (which I am a believer in) but he is also works for Jacob in some way, and the one whom can answer the question "what lies beneath the shadow of the statue". Plus his eyes have natural eye shadow and whats cooler than that
Eric Northman (True Blood): first nomination
Played by: Alexander Skarsgard
~True Blood quickly appeared on the television this season in the time when Vampires were growing in popularity. Halfway through the season, we got to really see the Vampire culture, and that is when Eric appears, one of the superiors in Louisiana. Like everything in True Blood he is multi-layered, not good nor bad.
Princess Mary of Tudor (The Tudors): first nomination
Played by: Sarah Bolger
~First off, I am minorly in love with Princess Mary, so lets keep that in mind (she is probably my second biggest celebrity crush). She is one of the scene stealers in the Tudors, and one feels for her and her unwanted position in power. She is not allowed to love because she is the daughter of the king, but will also never rule. Here is hoping that in the fourth and final season, Mary finally gets to live the life she dreams of (but odds are she won't)
John Wakefield (Harper's Island): first nomination
Played by: Callum Kieth Rennie
~Callum Rennie is more known for his work on Battlestar Galactica this season, but he truly shined as the creepy and critical John Wakefield. I won't go into too much detail (due to the fact that all of you should one day watch this show) but his appearance and the way he plays it is amazing. Doesn't talk alot, but he is one of the main reasons Harper's really turns the corner later on in the season.
Brian "Smash" Williams (Friday Night Lights): second nomination (first as reoccuring).
Played by: Gaius Charles
~I am not even sure that this is fair. As soon as Smash was demoted to a four-episode character arc, you knew a nomination was in his future. Then after the character arc ran it's course, you realize that they were four of the best episodes of TV this season, and Smash was the main part of it. Hopefully this isn't the last we see of him, but if it is the FNL writers treated him right and he definitely deserves this nomination.

~
First set of nominations down, four more to go. Some things of note: This is the first ever Don Awards were no two reoccurring actors came from the same show, as LOST has done so twice in the past, 24 once, OC once, and Prison Break once in the past. Also, there are two second nominated characters already in this years Don Awards, surpassing the record low number of 1 in all of Don Awards four, and we still have 10 more acting nominations to go. However, all five nominees of last year didn't make a reappearance, so in some other ways this is entirely a new batch, and one character this year (Eric Northman) has already been promoted to regular next season, and that possibility could also occur for Richard Alpert, so its possible we could have an entirely new batch next year, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Anyway, hope you enjoy tomorrows update as much as this one.

2008-09 Don Awards Television introduction

~Welcome to Don Award's #5!!! Yes, I have been doing this for five whole years now, three of which that have been posted on this blog. So what do we have in store for our fifth anniversary you ask? Well, this year I have decided not to make any promises that I won't keep. So yes... no Don's television hall of fame, or weekly Don television articles (man, I sucked at both of those). Instead we are going old school, and keeping things true to what brought all you fans to me in the first place (as I am now a national entity due to the fandom I received last year). But first there are some dates I'd like to throw out there. These are the tentative release dates of my updates. Once again, odds are the farther I get into this award ceremony, the less likely this will ever come to pass.

July 17th: Nominees for Best Reoccuring character
July 18th: Nominees for Best Male character
July 19th: Nominees for Best Female character
July 20th: Nominees for Best Episode of television
July 21st: Nominees for Best Television Show
July 27th: Major Television Stories of the Year
July 29th: Minor Television Awards
July 31st: The Major Television Awards

So there you go fans, a basic idea of my plans. I am sure I will run into some uncontrollable problems with my busy lifestyle, but I will work my best to disapoint none of you. So, with my national prowess these days, I need to substantiate that I am only a student with only trace amounts of time to devout to television. Therefore, when you see some major shows unrepresented in my awards, its do to the fact that I only watched 20 shows regularily this year, and couldn't afford more. Also, certain shows like Heroes, House, and 30 Rock were watched at the beggining but dropped for various reasons, so don't really qualify for the awards. The following shows, however, did qualify in this years Don Awards:

24
90210
Battlestar Galactica
Breaking Bad
Burn Notice
Chuck
Degrassi: Next Generation
Dexter
Dollhouse

Friday Night Lights
Fringe
Gossip Girl
Greek
Harper's Island
LOST
Mad Men
Shield
Skins
Survivor (both sections)
True Blood
Tudors

So there you go. Those are the twenty-one shows I watched in their entirety and will be making up the nominees and winners of most of the awards. I apologize if your personal shows didn't make the cut, and that doesn't mean those shows are poor, but just that they don't currently fit in my viewing schedule. Hopefully you enjoy this years awards, as it is a monumental one. Some big things may go down this year that could go in Don Awards infamy, so be prepared and never, EVER, be afraid to comment. I love reading what my fans thing. Peace out all of you, and enjoy!
